Well tink dropped me at the airport early in the morning. When I got to the counter I found out my flght was cancelled and I was on a later one which would arrive at 3 and was with air new zealand. Bloody quantus!
It was a good flight, but cold and sunny in NZ. I had to get used to a 2 hr time difference and temperatures that of sydney.
I sorted out acomodation and found out about hiring a camper van then went and stayed at a youth hostel on the outskirts of town.
I couldn't get my head around NZ at first, especially christchurch and where everything was. There was a nce canadian grl sharing the dorm room wth me so we chatted. I also couldn't get used to having mixed shower rooms and toilets. It was a bit odd to go to the bathroom and there's a bloke there.
I did discover an I rish pub that served guiness by a fire while watching a kiwi version of mtv. that was the first port of call and catching up on email and laundry.
I then got a cab to the cinema and watched I robot with wil smth. I enjoyed it. It was abit like Hal 2001. Good effects for what they could do and intreiging story line. Not bad for a holly wood block buster.
I bought myself a bottle of wine and had half of that in my room while comparing notes with the canadian girl I had met.
Durng the night a german couple arrived making as much noise as possible it was about 3am.
Overslept the next day. Then up sorting stuff out and sussing out about trips. Went back to my room and a hole gang were there. Friends of the germans who were still in bed and it was 1pm. So i made my exscuses as they were not being very sociable and left.
I walked to catheadrall square. Beauriful old catheadral and modern sculplture. Then I went to the new modern art gallery. That was afabulous glass buildng. The work was ok as well. Then I walked around teh art centre. It's a seres of mock gothic buildings all housing craft shops of gallleries. Some absolute trash.
I got chatting to a family who were closing the gallery early as it was cold. The grandfather who turns out to be the artist wouldn't staop talking. He is actually from yorkshire but has been over here for years. He hasn't lost the bus butter and bun accent.
After that I did the museum ut only had an hr before it shut. They had some scenes made up of maori and stuffed animals to give an example of how they lived. A good clothes exhibion dating throughout history and an excellent antartic area. The best were all the stuffed bird species although a lttle macarb and a mock twon street dating to the 1800's. The butcher, toy maker etc. Quite authentic.
After that I walked around the botanical gardens which was very picturesque. I couldn't do it all as it was about to close. Got a brief look at the rver which they punt down during summer. It's a very prietty church and no wonder they call it the garden capital.
On the way back I went to an irish pub called the bogg! Nice beer (kilkennys) and the place looked old and authentic. as much as it could be for an old kiwi irish pub!
For dinner I stopped at a lovely organic japenese restuarnt and had shami and a whole host of things. Yum!
That night i finished my bottle of wine while doing the internet which explans a lot of my previous entires. met a nice english guy called john/johnny who gave me a few tips. He is on the last leg of his NZ trip and about to hit aussie land so we swapped a few stories.
Next day I was booked for the transapline express which goes from christchurch to greymouth via arthurs pass.
