Named some toys the other day, pedro the tangerine bear, tom the rustling clover irish cow, and I'll have to guess as the spelling of this one, Bedada Babra the yellow clown pillow case.

Anyways, he left (yes, it was him :->) his shoes at nanna's house last week and aunty liz (who he goes to see on a tuesday) bought him some very nice (non leather -> vegetarian) shoes. They are sandals and fasten much easier than the last ones, and we didn't have to remortgage the house to buy them like the last ones.

Anyway he's a pic or three of our hero.

Benjamin just got his first pair of new shoes !! Now he's walking on his own a bit they said at the shop he needed proper ones with a hard sole. He had them put on him and he didn't like them to start with, he cried and cried, well for 30 seconds anyways, which isn't good in a shop really. So he tried some others on, and then the first ones were really the best, well you can get his foot in them easily, and they have a buckle, which, as a key feature for us, isn't as easy as laces or velcro to undo (although he did manage to get one off later). They seem to make him walk much better, he has to pick up his feet, and his legs are closer together than his former john wayne impersonations. So all's good there.

He's got a new little friend at nursery called Sienna, who is only a
few days older than him, and she's walking quite well (although she
was very funny when she fell over backwards!), so I think he's been
getting lessons off her.

And, of course, he can already do the housework better than his dad ...

He's had a good weekend for learning new tricks. First of all he
demonstrated that mummy is obviously spending all of her time which
isn't spent at work doing laundry instead. First he crawled to the
washing basket in the kitchen, pulled out his babygrow from the top,
crawled to the washing machine and carefully depositted it inside.
Then crawled back, grabbed one of his socks, crawled back, inserted
it into the machine. And again with a little vest. Then a pair of
denim dungarees - but just as he was putting them in, he changed his
mind, dropped them to the floor, and went and fetched the next thing
instead. So he's obviously even got the hang of sorting out the light
and dark clothes!

Then later on he was standing, using the coffee table for balance with
one hand, and something grasped in his other hand. So mean mummy put
his 'next' woolly hat on. So he let go of the coffee table and pulled
the hat off. Not even a wobble. Mind you, his feet were about 16"
apart.

He's also got the hang of clapping - both on his own, and on mummy's
hands (and face and throat, especially whilst he's meant to be going
sleep).

And his language is, slowly, improving. Although now everyone appears
to be mamamamama. 'Dor' quite often does mean door, but I think it
actually means "go that way" or "take me there" or "I'm going that way"
if he's not being held. And "fssssssssssssssssssssssh" for fishy. :-)
And Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm for milk. And, of course, the ever-famous
lurdleurdleurdle for banana!

Its pretty scarey for us parents, but at the end of the day you put your faith in doctors to do the right thing (which these days is often quite scarey in itself).

Thomas, Benjamin's cousin, had separate jabs, but he may have had these privately. Its just hard to tell whether that's better or not, and even to vaccinate or not. I mean the government says 'oh its ok, the dangers are all just scaremongering', but I've long since lost any faith in the government. But this jab, is it any worse that the polio vaccine? In that case 12 babies die every year from the vaccine, and baby pooh is infected for weeks afterwards and is a danger to parents on nappy duty, yet we just assume 'well yes, of course he'll have that vaccine'.

Anyways that's all for now, more on Babyworld.

It's damn scarey, sometimes, being a parent. But at the end of the day its, by far, worth the stress. :-)

Last week our hero broke his leg, and its about time I mentioned it on here.

Week last thursday he fell over the arm on the sofa, and hit his head on the door. We thought he was jsut crying from that, so we calmed him down, and it was past his bed time, so he went to bed. Next day he went to my mum's house for her to look after him for the day while Vicky worked from home (as is often the case).

About 3pm I get a call from Vicky saying she had talked to my mum and he said that Benjamin wasn't standing up or crawling, which if you know him these days is pretty unusual, and she thought there was something wrong with his leg.

So later on, I come home from work and see Benjamin, and he wont stand on his left leg, and only crawls on his left knee, holding his left foot in the air. The doctors would have been shut by then, as it was about ten to seven. So I call NHS Direct, and after waiting quite a while I get though to a call operator who I try to exaplin the problem to, and he takes notes and asks loads of questions, then says a nurse will call me back within half an hour. So we wait about 10 mins and she call and I exaplin the whole thing to her and she says ok well I think you should take him to A&E.

All this time Vicky is saying, I'm sure its just a sprain don't be a hypochondriact.

So we take him off down the hostpital, and wait and wait, and then we see a doctor. We explain what's happened, and what we think it might be, his knee, so he has a prod and a wiggle and a feel of his leg, and he sends us off to x-ray.

So he gets his lower thigh, knee and upper shin x-rayed (and they were very friendly and nice in there to him). Then we come back (and wait, etc.) and the doctor says, well I can't see anything, kinda implying that he is fine and says show me his walking, which of course Benjamin totally fails to do, not putting any weight on his leg. So the doctor tells us to just take him home, and come back for an A&E review appointment on monday.

So all weekend he's not moving much, and all this time, he doesn't seem very upset by the whole leg thing. I mean he's teething at the same time so he's crying sometimes, but it doesn't seem to be anything to do with his leg.

So monday morning we go to the review appointment, and a different doctor, feels his leg, and can't seem to find anything. Then Vicky pipes up with 'Oh, I think it's his ankle, not his knee' (not having mentioned that to me before.. *shrug*). So anyways, he says, well I don't really want to give him another X-ray unless we have to, extra radiation dose and all, so we'll put his leg in a cast and see how he is on friday. So we go and get his leg set in a cast and go home.

Friday we go to the doctor again, he says go get the cast taken off, and so we do, which takes ages because there is a big queue. And Benjamin really doesn't like the electric plaster saw, the nurse/plasterer says that kids ofetn don't because they have sensitive skin and the vibration upsets them. And I was scared by this thing, I mean, you think, 'what happens if it goes past the plaster', but the (very friendly and nice) nurse shows us without asking that, its ok and puts it over the palm of her hand and shows that its ok on skin and it wont cut him. So buzz, buzz, whir, and after a bit of pulling and extra buzzing off comes the plaster (which we have obviously kept for posterity).

We take him back to the doctor, and Benjamin still isn't standing or even moving his left ankle very well, so we get send off to x-ray for a picture of his lower shin, ankle and foot, (and the nurse was very nice to him again :-> ). And then we take this back to the doctor.

So the doctor takes one look at it then shows us, and true enough there is fairly reasonable break in his tibia (shin bone), just above the ankle. No hairline job either, but not quite all the way through. So back off to plaster again, and they put on a thinner plaster again so its easier to get off next time.

So we're going back on the 16th to get this plaster off and see how he has recovered.

So what's he been up to? Well he had quite a bad cold a few weeks ago, we even took him to the doctors, vicky says its cos I'm a hypercondriact (spelling?), but I say its cos I care; and the doctor thought it had taken him long enough to clear up to give him antibiotics. So anyway, he'd had a couple of week off from nursery because of it. And then, he got better, went back, and now he's got a cold again. Must be the season.

He wasn't very happy when he was all sickly before, but he's generally been keeping happy, so that's good.

Tomorrow we're taking to Blackpool for the day, to see the lights :-) Vicky wants to put him on a donkey, but he may be too small at 9 1/2 months. But don't get me wrong, he's big for his age, and he can hold to to hair alright as his mum finds out quite often ;-)) (naughty boy), but we can't rely on him to hold onto the donkey.

Should be fun, we're taking Vicky's Nanny (Benjamin's great-nanny), who hopefully won't drive Vicky totally up the wall.
