Late Feb plantings + update

Bit of a review of what is and isn't working so far, and what we have done this weekend.

From earlier list:
* garlic - 8 cloves in individual pots, greenhouse - all sprouting well
* onions - 10 'volunteer' sprouts, individual pots, greenhouse - all well
* tomato - harbinger - 6 x 2-per module, house - these got knocked on the floor and swept back in, but at least 2 of the modules have sprouted
* tomato - sweet'n'neat yellow - individual pots (for Daniel), house - one has just popped through
* tomato - GD - 6 x 5-per-module, house - all up, plus some extras!
* melon - eldorado f1 - 6 x 4-per-module, house - nothing.
* pepper - california wonder - 6 x 4-per-module, house - couple of these are now coming up
* pepper - marconi rosso - 6 x 4-per-module, house - nothing
* aubergine - black beauty - 6 x 2-per-module, house - nothing
* sprouts - evesham special - 2 trays, greenhouse - all coming up!
* leek - lyon 2 'prizetaker' - 2 trays, greenhouse - nothing

Bought 5 new roses to go on the allotment. And we managed to get 4 of the 6+some (unsure how many he got off ebay) asparagus into the old, slightly dead asparagus bed.

I've started weeding under the currant+gooseberry bushes, which is a mess. Hope I didn't disturb them too much.

Nick has moved all of the yellow raspberries from the middle of half-plot to the edge, so they work as a windbreak. Plus the ribena bush and the aronia bush.

Meant to spend the evening planting seeds, but haven't had time. Really really need to get some more modules started!

Pea Overload!

I'm having a bit of a "Nick, are you sure you didn't buy too many peas?"
moment here.

On top of whatever we have left from last year, plus the (really
obscenely expensive) purple mange tout I bought last week (3.49 for 100!), it
woudl appear he has also bought:

* victorian climbing pea
*
* victorian climbing pea (~100)
*
* victorian climbing pea (~250)
* kelvedon wonder (1200)
* petit pois (600)

Plus 250 asparagus pea (not really a pea)

* petit pois (600)

* petit pois (600)
* kelvedon wonder (1800)
* petit pois (600)
* mange tout (1200)
* giant sugar mange tout (450)
Plus 250 asparagus pea (not really a pea)
* giant sugar mange tout (450)
* first fletham (1000)

Plus 250 asparagus pea (not really a pea)

It's cold out there!

Who would have thought less than a month ago, we were out on the plot in short sleeves, sweating away, and now I won't go out cos it's too cold! Ok, I plodded along earlier this week to show my dad what was around, but it was hard to tell as there were 6-8" of snow on top of most of it!

Was excited to see that the tomato seedlings are popping through, planted 2 weeks ago and put on the sunny window sill. Nothing coming through yet from the peppers sown at the same time, nor the leeks and sprouts that were left in the chilly greenhouse (as instructed!)

6 modules of 5-seeds-each of Gardeners Delight starting to poke out their seedy little heads. Or more accurately, 4 modules of 5 seeds, 1 module of nothing, and one module of 10. Oops.

Over on the allotment, the brassicas are still looking mostly ok, but the romanesco cauli, which were just starting to form teeny tiny heads, look like they've been frost-damaged. :-( I should have elastic-banded them shut when I realised it was going to snow, I guess. Calabrese is still looking good, though.

Potatoes are all hanging under the spare bed in hanging baskets, chitting away. Only a couple of weeks until the first earlies need to go in. Maybe we'll hold on until March if it doesn't warm up. Picked up an extra bag of Annabel potatoes for 2 pound (for about 20) in Van Hague last week, and they're looking very happy.

Need to get on with planting some more seeds. We always leave peppers and aubergines till too late, as they have a very long growing season. I meant to put aubergines in in Jan! Need to get them in and onto the windowsill asap. If only it wasn't so freezing out there ... !
